Level 2 S&C Coaching Course for Rowing

This past weekend I delivered a level 2 strength and conditioning course for Rowing Ireland's Coach Education. The course, for rowing coaches who want to expand their S&C knowledge, was hosted by ATU Galway's Department of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition. On day one the coaches recieved the following content from me:

  • Lecture on S&C programme design
  • Practical 1 - demonstration of bodyweight exercise technique
  • Practical 2 - progressions and regressions of exercises in practical 1
  • Practical 3 - time spent coaching and being coached the exercises from practicals 1 and 2

After a short break the complexity of the exercises being taught increase to dumbell, barbell, plate loaded machines, and cable machines. Following the same methods outlined above, coaches were in a hands on environment learning and coaching the different exercise techniques.

Day 2 of the course began with a short lecture on the difference between periodization and programming. Each coach recieved different programming documentation templates. Finally, we applied the theory of the content in group project work. Coaches were assigned different case studies and had to make an S&C session relavant to their case study.

Once the coaches had time to make their sessions, they presented their content to their peers. Feedback was provided and peers also asked for explanations or justification for the approach chosen. It proved to be a really useful exercise and it was clear from my perspective that the coaches were beginning to upskill in this area. Once everyone presented, each coach was able to photogrpah the different session types so they could leave the course with even more tools in their toolbox.

If you think this type of workshop would be beneficial to you and the coaches in your club get in touch with me for a consultation. We can plan together and tailor content to the level your coaches need.
