Ever wondered how much weight a junior rower lifts in one year or one rowing season? With the advances in gym technology, and athlete management software becoming more popular, its easier to get a better idea of how much juniors lift. Of course, this info is dependent on the type of programme, frequency of training, age of the athlete, and individual strength level.

Programming Details
After a successful season lifting in the gym with Galway Rowing Club, I will discuss the ins and outs of my programming with their teams this season. Data provided is anaonymous. Here are some keys characteristics of their programming this year:
- Key focus: Strength and Power (see here for blog about the difference between the two)
- Season Duration: 1st of Sept 2024 to 30th June 2025
- Emphasis on strength development: September = 100%, May onward = 0%
- Emphasis on power development: September = 0%, May onward = 100%
- Strength gradually gave more room to Power as the season progressed.
- Session frequency: J16 = 2/week, J18 = 3/week (2minimum)
- Session duration: 75min including warmup

By the Numbers
The numbers reflected here are not true numbers lifted and really just reflect what the athletes recorded into the Lumin App after each session. No doubt next years numbers will be even more accurate as they try to beat their total recorded volume record.
| Club Total | 5,271,713KG |
| J18 & 16 Boys Total | 2,890,681KG |
| Most Weight Lifted by J18/16 Boy | 270,342KG |
| Average Weight Lifted by J18/16 Boy | 152,141KG |
| J18 Girls Total | 1,120,234KG |
| Most Weight Lifted by J18 Girl | 195,555KG |
| Average Weight Lifted by J18 Girl | 140,029KG |
| J16 Girls Total | 1,260,798KG |
| Most Weight Lifted by J16 Girl | 180,764KG |
| Average Weight Lifted by J16 Girl | 157,222KG |
It's worth noting the data entry compliance of each group. This will always have a big impact on the numbers reported above so even though average attendance was about 70% for their gym sessions, their data entry varied: J18/16 boys 40%, J18 Girls 29%, J16 Girls 65%. So based on that, we can say the J16 girls numbers reflect a number closer to the true weight lifted.

If you think your team would benefit from an evidence based, professional approach from their gym sessions, please get in touch with me for a no obligation 10minute consultation. I would be happy to discuss any of the info above and answer any questions you may have.
